Like Counter-Strike before it, Valve Software has taken over another third party Half-Life mod and will bring
it to retail stores in early May via publisher Activision. While the WWII multiplayer themed Day of Defeat game will have some unique retail levels for now, Half-Life mod players will still be able to download their free version with a new update due out this week. HomeLAN got a chance to chat with Day of Defeat team member John Morello II and Valve's marketing manager Doug Lombardi to find out more about their plans for Day of Defeat. HomeLAN - First, how does it feel to have the Day of Defeat mod turned into a full retail product with full support from Valve? John Morello II - Every day seems so surreal. I walk through the reception area and there's Gordon and the crowbar and a headcrab. Then to keep walking and further down the hall see a poster for a product I've dedicated countless hours to is truly amazing. We've been here almost a year now and it's still hasn't fully sunk in yet. I'm just worried I'm going to wake up soon because this was my dream a few short years ago. HomeLAN - What were the main goals when the decision was made to make Day of Defeat a full-fledged stand-alone game? Doug Lombardi - No different than our goals with any other game: Deliver a very approachable, high-quality product to as large an audience as possible. The DoD team had built a great foundation as a MOD, and that work and momentum made the process of "going retail" very easy. HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the new maps that will be included in the new Day of Defeat release? John Morello II - We began with many submissions from the community. Slowly we began to reduce the number through constant play testing, as we worked in conjunction with the mappers. We ended up with six remakes and nine brand new maps that we felt best represented the new and refined gameplay. To name a few of the new ones; Jagd and Zalec both incorporate our new mission style of play where one of the teams has to destroy enemy tanks with rpgs (Bazooka, Panzerschreck, or Piat depending on your country). Rpgs also play a role in the new maps Kalt, Forest, and Vicenza where they can be used to open new pathways through the level. All in all, we're really excited to see what the existing community and new players think. HomeLAN - What tweaks have been made to some of the existing maps in the game? John Morello II - We took the most played maps and gave them a graphical overhaul as well as incorporated some of the new features such as rpgs and particle effects. Caen, Anzio, Avalanche, Kraftstoff, Glider, and Merderet (previously Ramelle) have all been upgraded. HomeLAN - What other new content and gameplay changes will be made to the new Day of Defeat release? John Morello II - 95% of all the art assets have been either been completely redone from scratch or been significantly improved. That includes models, textures, animations, sounds and levels. Some of the new features we've added are the British as an Allied force that comes with it's own arsenal. We've also added the ability to drop your primary weapon as well. We really liked the air of uncertainty this can add when you're in a firefight and you hear a weapon that was previously available to your teammates only, but could now be in the hands of the enemy. Another addition is a new map system that can be displayed in a few different ways. In full map mode, the map takes up most of your screen. However, in this mode, you can mark the map with references that will be shown to all your teammates. Mini-map mode appears in the corner of your screen and displays the location of friendly units as well as the basic objectives of that map, be it a flag or a tank or documents or whatever. And, of course, maps can also be turned off entirely. But we found this extra bit of information has really improved the teamplay by providing an extra tool of communication that doesn't impede the core gameplay. HomeLAN - What content will be exclusive to the retail version and what will still be included in the free Half-Life mod version? John Morello II - Those who purchase the retail version will have instant access to the new VGUI 2.0-based functionality. More streamlined and fully customizable, it includes a new menuing system that allows you to customize your settings, browse and filter servers, and more while in or out of the game. HomeLAN - What is the current status of the retail version and when will it be released? John Morello II - DoD v1.0 is scheduled for in-store release around the world on Tuesday, May 6. The update for the MOD version will be released Thursday, May 1. HomeLAN - What plans does Valve have for future versions of the Day of Defeat mod? John Morello II - Well, our current concern is getting this version out the door and then fixing any issues that may arise, as well as the possible addition of some new content. Outside of that, only time can tell... |
